A second spare tyre wouldn't kill either.. as Pete'n Margaret said good near new tyres, lots of water, and FUEL, the dirt roads make fuel consumption way higher than sealed roads, so count on using way more fuel, i realize no one wants to die in a fire ball of death but a couple of 20 liter drums on the roof of extra fuel might be needed.
The road from Birdsville north has less gravel if you are going via Boulia. It is mostly gravel to Bedourie but is then fully sealed to Winton or Mt Isa. You will have a pleasant trip if you follow my tips and don't get too uptight on your first long distance experience on good gravel.

DAY FIVE: A DAY AT THE BIRDSVILLE TRACK. Day: Birdsville Races. The Birdsville Cup is the pinnacle of outback racing calendar and the reason so many people make the 2000km pilgrimage to Queensland's south-west. The track is dry, sun hot and beers cold, which is an award-winning trifecta, and that's before you've even placed a bet.
As I turned south from Mount Isa down to Birdsville the country started stretching out and getting drier, the roads got smaller, still sealed but narrow so extra caution was needed to get out of the way of oncoming road trains.
Jun 16, 2017· The same thing can happen on the road out to Birdsville or anywhere else but it is not only the aftereffects of rain that you have to worry about. You can run into bull dust holes, deep dips in causeways, sandy patches, deep ruts, corrugations or loose surfaces on bends. You can't set time limits or decide on a cruising speed on those roads.

The Birdsville Track is arguably the most iconic dirt road in Australia. Some even choose to take their caravans along the 517km route, which runs from the tiny South Australian town of […]

Oct 23, 2017· I made camp further up the road and, like a reward for a hard day behind the wheel, the stars came out across a stunning night sky. The next day I managed to limp the rest of the way to Birdsville where Sam and the guys at the Birdsville Roadhouse sorted me out with some new bushes and bolts for the trailer. Much appreciated, lads.

Less than half an hour later, you'll see Lake Eyre South.
